How to Start with ZERO Visitors!

Simple Strategies for You to Implement and Get Immediate Results!

I see it time and time again: The #1 challenge faced by
brand-new Internet business owners is a lack of traffic

Obviously, if your web site isn't getting any traffic,
you're not generating any sales. But worse -- without
traffic, you can't test the key components of your sales
process...

Step One: Get the traffic you need to test
your web site -- fast!

When I talk about testing with new Internet business
owners, I hear the same two questions all the time:

1. How do I test my site?
2. What do I test on my site?

As you may already know, there are an infinite number of
things you can test on your web site to increase sales. From
layout to copy to design, there are limitless combinations
of changes that may improve your visitor-to-sale conversion
rate.

But what's "enough" when you're just starting out?

What elements should you focus on testing before rolling out
your traffic campaign?

My advice is to stick to the basics. Focus on
testing your...

- Salescopy (especially your headline, benefits, guarantee,
and call to action), also called AdCopy.

- Order process (Is it simple enough for a novice web user
to place an order?)

- Opt-in offer (Are you successfully capturing visitors'
contact information?)

- Site navigation (How many clicks does it take to buy?
Ideally it should take less than three.)

These are the four critical aspects of your sales process
that need to be tested before you start driving traffic.

Later on, once you've generated sales and have some steady
traffic, you can move on to testing other parts of your web
site.

Of course, all this talk of testing your new web site raises
one BIG question: How can you test without traffic? If
you're just getting started, chances are good that your web
site doesn't get much traffic yet.

The solution is simple: Buy traffic through PPC search
engines
.

Pay-per-click search engines are a lot like auctions --
they allow you to bid for top-ranking positions under
keywords of your choice
.

For each visitor who searches the keyword(s) you bid on and
then clicks through to your web site, you pay whatever you bid.
Prices typically range from five cents to a few dollars per
click-through for popular keywords.

There are a ton of PPC search engines out there, but the two
best ones to get started with are...

1. Yahoo Search Marketing -- http://searchmarketing.yahoo.com

2. Findwhat -- http://www.findwhat.com

With PPC search engines, you get cheap, instant, qualified
traffic
-- provided you bid on targeted keywords. Not only
that, but bidding on traffic in the PPC search engines can
help your site get ranked in the free search engines, too!

Here are a couple of tips to help you start bidding for
traffic without breaking the bank
:

1. In Yahoo Search Marketing, bid to appear in the top three
listings whenever possible
, since these results are also
"pushed" to appear in the search results for MSN, Yahoo,
AltaVista, InfoSpace, AlltheWeb and NetZero -- reaching
80% of Internet users!

2. Bid on targeted, descriptive keywords -- don't just bid on
"sock," bid on "red wool sock." Not only are targeted
keywords and phrases usually cheaper to bid on -- they'll
also attract more qualified potential buyers.

Use a keyword selection tool like Wordtracker --
http://www.WordTracker.com -- to research targeted
keywords that attract maximum traffic for minimal
cost-per-click
!

After you've tested and tweaked your web site with a limited
amount of purchased traffic, it's time to start generating
qualified traffic for your site on a bigger scale.

How do you go from some traffic to a ton of traffic?

Step Two: Get cheap traffic quickly with PPC advertising!
---------------------------------------------------------

Once you've tested your site with limited PPC traffic, the
fastest way to ramp up traffic to your web site is to roll
out a PPC campaign on a bigger scale.

Obviously, you should start with Yahoo Search Marketing and
Findwhat, as mentioned above. But here are some more PPC
engines to consider bidding with as you increase your
investment:

- Kanoodle -- http://www.kanoodle.com

- Enhance Interactive -- http://www.enhance.com

- LookSmart -- http://www.LookSmart.com

- Espotting (for the UK & Europe) -- http://www.espotting.com

This is also a great time to get started with
Google AdWords
-- Google's own PPC contender: http://adwords.google.com

You get instant traffic -- with no waiting! As soon as you
put the money down on your keywords, your ad goes up and
starts working for you!

Step Three: Get FREE traffic from search engines
like Google!

--------------------------------------------------

Now that you've bid on keywords for a strong showing in the
PPC search engines, it's time to tackle the organic search
engines and directories!

Search engines (like Google) and directories (like Yahoo)
can still be great sources of free traffic for your web
site. The trick is getting a competitive ranking for your
best keywords.

The first step in getting a top ranking in the search
engines is submitting or suggesting your site to them. In
other words, you have to provide them with details about
your site!

You want to make sure that the "spiders" -- automated
programs that crawl the Web indexing sites for the search
engines -- find your site and include it in the search
results.

While the spiders DO index sites and pages that have not
been submitted, you certainly don't want to leave this to
chance. A spider might find your web site and index it next
week... or it might be two years before it finally happens.

Take the time to submit your site, and you can be sure that
you're included! Once your site has been submitted, expect
it to take two to six weeks for your listing to appear.

Every search engine has a slightly different process for site
submission, and it pays to follow their guidelines. For
example, there is a fee to list your site in the directory
at Yahoo, but Google does not charge for their submission
process.

If you submit your site exactly as they ask, you stand a
better chance of getting a good listing on the first page of
search results.

To submit or suggest your site to the major engines, follow
the simple instructions they provide:

- For Google: http://www.google.com/addurl/?continue=/addurl

- For Yahoo Directory: http://docs.yahoo.com/info/suggest

- For Yahoo Search: http://submit.search.yahoo.com

- For MSN: http://search.msn.com/docs/submit.aspx

- For AOL, submit your site to the Open Directory Project,
which uses ODP data: http://dmoz.org/add.html

And don't bother with companies that offer to submit your
web site to the search engines. Since each search engine
uses a different set of criteria to rank your site, free
submission services can actually end up doing more harm than
good, since they submit the same information to all the
engines.

Step Four: Give away irresistible free content for
priceless publicity!

-------------------------------------------------

Believe it or not, a really easy, frequently undervalued
strategy for getting traffic is giving away free content to
other web sites
. Even just two or three well-written
articles can generate truckloads of traffic, as long as they
don't contain a sales pitch.

You want to include rare, hard-to-get information that will
lend your articles automatic value: the kind of information
that establishes you as an expert in your field!

Once you've finished, write a short bio paragraph about you
and your business
and place it at the end of your article
along with (and this is the most important part!) a link to
your site
.

E-mail other web site owners in your industry -- be sure to
choose sites that receive attention and visits from your
target market -- and invite them to use your article on
their web site or in their newsletter at absolutely no cost
.

Many site owners need fresh content, so they'll be more than
happy to post your articles -- and it won't be long before
those articles start driving traffic back to your web site.

Another option is to give away your articles through free
content web sites like:

- http://www.ezinearticles.com

- http://www.freesticky.com

Your articles will be made automatically available to
thousands of web site owners seeking free, quality content
-- and all you have to do is submit your articles once!


Don't underestimate the power of giving away free content.
And as your articles gain more exposure, don't be surprised
if you're contacted by high-profile magazine and portal
sites related to your industry looking for free articles to
include on their sites, too!

Step Five: Get FREE "word-of-mouth" publicity using
viral marketing!

---------------------------------------------------

Imagine a marketing strategy so simple that you could
put it to work immediately -- without spending a dime
-- walk away from it, and trust that it would keep working
without any extra effort from you
.

That's what viral marketing is all about. Simply defined,
viral marketing enables you to spread your marketing message
like a virus
. You encourage people to pass on information
about your web site to one another and use that word-of-
mouth publicity to advertise your business
!

Once you start the "virus," it spreads without you lifting a
finger!

Hotmail.com, the free web-based e-mail service provider, is
a classic example of viral marketing. At the bottom of every
single Hotmail e-mail sent by Hotmail members, there is a
simple one-line message:

Get your free, private e-mail from MSN at
http://www.hotmail.com

How much time do you think it took Hotmail to include that
signature line as part of their e-mail service? Not much at
all -- but look at the impact that this simple strategy had
on the growth of their business.

In my personal experience, more than 35% of e-mail users
have Hotmail accounts!

You can easily duplicate this strategy by doing something as
simple as including a "pass it on link" at the end of a free
newsletter.

Something as simple as...

"If you've enjoyed this article, please be sure to forward
it to a friend
!"

By simply asking readers to take action and forward your
newsletter
, you'll prompt free "word of mouth" exposure for
your business -- without any extra cost or hassle!

And there's no limit to how far your message can travel!

So how do you put viral marketing to work for you? Here are
a few simple ideas:

- Give away free articles (like the ones in Step Four!) with a
"pass it on" link.

- Give away free demos of your product.

- Offer a free trial of your service with a "share this great
resource" button on the page.

- Hold a contest on your web site and give participants an
extra entry for every friend they refer.

- Start an affiliate program (see Step Seven!).

As you can see, you don't need to be the next Hotmail to get
started with viral marketing -- by simply encouraging people
to "share this resource with friends," you can attract some
great "word-of-mouth" traffic.

Step Six: Get FREE links on other high-traffic web sites!
---------------------------------------------------------

Link requests require minimal effort from you, but they can
absolutely explode your traffic numbers overnight. How? If your
site is a featured link on a major site in your industry -- one
that receives a ton of attention -- your site immediately
benefits from all the exposure their site receives
!

Getting started with this strategy is simple, but you should
follow a standard process every time you request a link.
Let's break it down into a few easy steps:

1. Do a Google search for your standard keywords -- the ones
that people generally use to find your site.

2. Make detailed notes about the sites that appear regularly
in the top ten listings for your major keywords.

3. Use the Alexa Toolbar at http://www.alexa.com,
LinkPopularity at http://www.linkpopularity.com, or
Technorati at http://www.technorati.com to find out who
these sites are linking to, who is linking to them, and
how much traffic they are receiving, then look up their
contact information.

4. Make sure you know the correct URL for the site, the URL
of the sub-page on which you want your link to appear, the
name of the site owner or webmaster, the date you last
visited their site, and a brief description of the
contents of the site.

When you're ready to contact these web site owners and
request a link, write a personal e-mail -- don't
use form letters.

Be sure to include some positive comments about their site,
information about you and your site (along with your URL),
an explanation of why a link to you would benefit them, and
instructions for contacting you to get started!

You want your request to be thorough and professional. If
you can present a persuasive argument for why the link
request benefits both of you, you stand a better chance of
forging a connection.

If you are really eager to get your link on their site, be
prepared to up the ante by offering them a commission or a
link on your site in return. The investment could be well
worth the extra exposure your marketing message receives.

But be stingy when other businesses request links on your
site -- just as links on other sites serve as a personal
recommendation of your site, links on your site are
recommendations for their businesses. Only recommend the
best
!

Okay, now let's talk about the ultimate linking strategy...

Step Seven: Get 000s of web sites to promote your
business -- FREE!

---------------------------------------------------

Imagine hundreds, even thousands, of web sites
promoting your product or service... and all this great
exposure doesn't cost you a DIME unless someone refers a
paying customer. You can do this with what's called an
affiliate program.

Affiliate programs (also referred to as "reseller" or
"associate" programs) are a great way to get other people
called "affiliates" to promote your product or service for
you.

For every paying customer your affiliates refer to your
web site, you pay them a commission. And since you only pay
when you make money -- it's extremely low risk!

Your affiliates send visitors to your web site using banner
ads, text links, letters of referral, and so on, while you
track these referrals using special software
. It's an
extremely powerful way to grow your business because it
automates your traffic generation.

To get started with your own affiliate program, you need
to...

- Set your commissions. (To keep your affiliates motivated,
you should pay them 40% to 50% of your profits per sale.)

- Get software to track the traffic and sales of your
affiliates so you know what to pay them -- check out:

- Provide your affiliates with tools they can use to promote
your products (like e-mails, banners, etc.).

- Recruit your affiliates! (Look for sites that target your
market, and invite them to become affiliates.)

Affiliate programs are an ideal way to automate your traffic
generation because other people market your web site for you
-- and you don't lift a finger.

Your sales increase on a daily basis -- but they do all the
selling for you, and it doesn't cost you a dime until they
send you paying customers.

Now, for the final step, let's talk about what you need to
do to keep your traffic coming back to your site again and
again
.

Step Eight: Use e-mail marketing to attract repeat
visitors!

Getting lots of traffic to your site is great,
but if you aren't collecting the contact information
(i.e. names and e-mail addresses) of visitors, you're
wasting every single click!

If visitors leave your site without buying your product,
there's a good chance they won't ever be back -- and you'll
have absolutely no way of following up with them!

Remember: It can take up to seven points of contact to make
a single sale, so you'll want to begin collecting visitors'
contact information from day one using an opt-in form on
your homepage
!

Here are some ideas for e-mails you could send in case you
need an excuse to follow up with your opt-in subscribers:

- Monthly or bi weekly newsletters with tons of tips and info

- Free reports on a variety of topics that your market would
appreciate

- Answers to common questions people ask about your product

- Offers for products similar or complementary to ones you
may have already offered them

- Free product trials that give potential customers a taste
of what you have to offer

- A "downgrade" offer for a product that is less expensive
or robust than your featured offer

Following up with the addresses you gather is quick, easy,
and simple with e-mail management and automation software.

You can create e-mails called "autoresponders" that
potential customers receive automatically, as soon as they
opt in on your site -- within seconds -- no matter what
time of day it is, or whether you're even at your desk!

That's right -- as soon as your visitors opt in, they start
hearing from you on a regular basis without the stress of
writing a ton of e-mails to individual addresses. This is a
process you can put on autopilot from the very beginning!

In this article, I've shown you how to get past the biggest
hurdle faced by new web site owners -- finding traffic to test
your sales process and maximize your visitor-to-sale conversion
rate before launching your web site
.

I've also provided you with a 10,000-foot overview of the
steps involved in rolling out a traffic campaign that will
quickly ramp up visitors to your new or growing web site.

First, I recommended that you start with a PPC campaign,
because it generates instant traffic and sales for your web
site at a low cost, provided you follow the bidding tips I
shared here.

Next, I recommended that you submit your web site to the
"organic" search engines and directories like Google and
Yahoo, which can be a great source of unlimited FREE traffic,
provided your listing appears on the first page of search
results for your top keywords.

From there, the three traffic strategies you'll probably
want to tackle are...

1. Giving away free content to get free links (and
traffic) from other web sites that target your market.

2. Using "recommend this to a friend" links in your
newsletters and on your web site to get free "word-of-
mouth" publicity (viral marketing)

3. Request links from high-traffic web sites, so you
can piggy-back their top search engine rankings!

Finally, we briefly discussed how you can start an affiliate
program to exponentially grow your business by recruiting an
army of affiliates who will promote your business on every
corner of the Web, with absolutely no risk to you -- because
you don't pay them a DIME unless they send you a paying
customer!

Obviously, we've covered a LOT of ground in this article...
So I think it's only fair I point out that, before you dive
into ANY of these strategies, you'll need to do a bit
more reading and research on each of these topics

this is the most effective strategy for you.

We've found that offering fewer products in one place with
more copy describing those products ALWAYS translates into
higher sales.

It's all about focus.

Instead of trying to please *everyone* who visits your web
site by offering a large range of products with minimal
detail about each one, when you offer just one product (or
one set of related products), you can really focus on one
key set of benefits and answer *all* of the possible questions
and doubts your visitors might have about your product.

And you don't have to stop selling your other products --
you can always offer them to your customers from other web
pages or by using follow-up offers (see Test #12).

Of course, the only way to find out for sure if this will
work with your target audience is to test it! Write a
salesletter for your lead product and put it on your

Test #2: Reposition your opt-in offer to BOOST your opt-ins
and build a bigger list of loyal subscribers!

Your opt-in offer is your tool for gathering your customers'
e-mail addresses
. In exchange for their address, you might
offer them a free report containing valuable information or
a regular free newsletter.

Your opt-in is your mechanism for building your e-mail list,
which allows you to regularly keep in touch with your
subscribers, build relationships of trust and loyalty, and
sell them your products or services.

But did you know that WHERE your opt-in offer appears on
your site can have a huge impact on how many subscribers
you attract?

If you don't use a long salesletter, test placing your
opt-in offer in as prominent a position as possible on your
homepage -- the top-left of a page is where visitors' eyes
are often drawn first.

At the very least, test placing your opt-in in the "first
fold" of your salesletter -- the area of screen first
visible to a visitor before they scroll down the page.

If you have a long salesletter, you should test placing it
within your second "page" of text -- after you've grabbed
your visitors' attention by identifying a problem they have
and established your credibility by impressing them with
your credentials, experience, and glowing testimonials from
happy customers.

You should also test placing your opt-in offer on EVERY page
of your web site so it's always in front of your visitors,
and try using a "hover ad" (see below). The more sign-up
opportunities you provide, the more subscribers you're
likely to get. Test it and see!

Test #3: Add impact to your promotions with "hover ads"

I'm sure everyone's familiar with pop-ups. They're the small
windows containing a special offer or other information that
sometimes "pop up" when you visit a web site.

Love 'em or hate 'em, pop-ups have been a very useful online
marketing tool for years. However, because a percentage of
Internet users disliked them, Google, AOL, Netscape, and
others developed pop-up blocking software to combat them.

Of course, Internet users should be able to *choose* whether
or not they want to view pop-ups. However, much of this
software *automatically* blocked pop-ups, meaning visitors
to a site started missing out on valuable information that
could benefit them.

But that was before we discovered a very impressive
technology that actually lets you use ads that BEHAVE like
pop-ups, that are NOT pop-ups -- so they don't get
blocked. They're called "hover ads" and they're well
worth testing on your site
.

In fact, when we tested adding a hover ad to our site,
sales increased by 162%! They're effective because they put
important information, such as your opt-in offer or a
special time-limited promotion, right in front of your
targeted visitors.

You can test placing your opt-in offer in your hover ad to
see if that boosts subscription numbers. When we did this,
86% more people subscribed to our newsletter!

You can also test how many more people click through to a
special offer page on your web site through a hover ad
versus through a regular link on your homepage.

Test #4: Feature different benefits in your headline

Your headline has a HUGE impact on your sales. It's often
the first thing visitors to your site see so it must grab
their attention and compel them to read your salesletter.

A successful headline should highlight a problem your target
audience faces and stress the main benefit of your product
or service in solving this problem
. Let's look at an example
that illustrates how a headline can be changed for maximum
impact.

One of our clients was using the following headline on his
site: "Box4Blox -- The Amazing Toy Storage Box For Lego."
The problem with this headline is that it tells you what the
product *is*, but not what it *does for you*. It doesn't
give a visitor any good reason to continue reading the rest
of the page.

Contrast this with "Finally! Discover the Secret That's Got
More Than 50,000 LEGO-Crazy Kids Worldwide Actually
*LOVING* Clean-Up Time!" This headline presents a major
benefit of the product and a solution to a problem -- in
this case, how to get kids to clean up after themselves,
and actually enjoy it. Cool teaching tool too!

Test #5: Establish a problem in your copy and show how you
can solve it

In the first couple of paragraphs that appear on your
homepage, you need to go into more detail about the problem
you introduced in your headline -- showing your audience that
you relate to them. (Only when your audience feels you
understand their problem will they feel confident that you
can solve it.)

Once the problem is established, you can then begin
introducing your product or service as the solution to this
problem. By emphasizing exactly *how* your product or
service will solve the reader's problem, you're guaranteed
to see a boost in sales!

Test #6: Add credibility to your copy... and enhance your
visitors' trust in you

It's vital that your salescopy establishes your credibility:
It's through this process that your visitors come to trust
you and feel comfortable enough to buy from you.

There are several ways you can do this effectively and we'll
talk about two of the quickest and easiest ones here. If
you're not already using these techniques, revamp your copy
and test it against what you're using now. You'll be
surprised by the difference.

One of the best ways to establish your credibility is to
include customer testimonials in your salesletter. These
should be excerpts from genuine e-mails or letters from
customers expressing how your product or service helped
solve the particular problem they faced.

This last point is important: A customer testimonial that
states *how* your product benefited them is much more
effective than one that just says something like, "Your
product is great!"

You can also enhance your credibility by adding a section to
your copy that outlines your credentials, experience, and
any background information that make you qualified to solve
your target audience's problem
.

Your aim should be to effectively convince readers that *you*
are the best person to offer them a solution to their problem.

Test #7: Focus on your readers... not yourself

The most successful salescopy focuses on the reader.
Too often, business owners neglect this simple golden rule.
Look carefully at your salescopy.

Is it filled with references to "I," "me," and "we"? Instead
of using sentences like, "I designed my time-management
software with the busy homeowner in mind," use "Your new
time-management software will free up hours of time for you
to spend with your family." See how much more powerful
that is?

Search for words like "I," "me," and "our" in your salescopy
and replace them with "you" and "your."

Test #8: Instill urgency into your copy -- and convince
readers they need to buy NOW!

It's very important that your salescopy instills a sense of
urgency in your visitors
, compelling them to buy NOW. The
best place to do this is towards the end of your
salesletter, near the call to action (when you ask for the
sale).

Here are a few of the most effective ways to create a sense
of urgency. Try testing each one against your current copy:

- Offer a limited-time price discount offer where
visitors must buy before a certain date in order to
qualify for the discount

- Offer additional bonuses for free if they buy within a
certain time frame

- Offer only a limited quantity of your products or
services

- Offer a limited quantity bonus

Test #9: Remove references to "buying" from the first fold

People usually go online looking for free information. If
you start your sales pitch too early in your copy, you may
end up losing them before you've had the chance to hook
them.

You first need to get them interested in what you have
to say by relating to a problem they're facing (as I
outlined in Test #5) and how YOU can solve it. Once you've
accomplished that, you can start to sell to them.

Here's an easy way to improve the tone of your salesletter:
Try removing references to "buying," "cost," and "sale" from
the first fold, and compare the results to the copy you're
using now.

Don't mention anything to do with making a purchase or
spending money until after your reader is interested in
your product and trusts you enough to buy from you!

Test #10: Boost your product's desirability by adding images

Images of your products make them seem more tangible and
"real" to your visitors and are a powerful sales tool. In
fact, our testing shows that you can increase sales by more
than 10% just by adding product images.

But sometimes revealing what the product is too early in the
sales process can kill the sale -- you may need to highlight
the product benefits and value before you reveal exactly
what it is.

Test placing images near the top of the page against placing
them near the call to action at the bottom (where you're
asking for the sale).

You should also test adding images to your order page, and
test the response to using no images at all. By carefully
analyzing sales during each test, you'll learn exactly where
to place product images for maximum impact.

Test #11: Grab the attention of "scanners" by changing the
formatting and appearance of your copy

Very few visitors to your web site will read every word of
your salescopy from start to finish. Most will "scan" your
copy as they scroll down the page
, reading only certain
words and phrases that jump out at them or catch their eye.

That's why you need to test highlighting your key benefits
to find the right combination that will grab the attention
of people who scan rather than read online.

These include --

- Using bold, italics, and highlighting (sparingly) to
emphasize the most important benefits of your offer

- Varying the length of your paragraphs so the page
doesn't just look like a block of uniformly formatted text

- Adding sub-headlines that emphasize your key messages
and compel your visitors to read the paragraphs that follow

- Leaving the right-hand side of your text ragged
(as that's easier to read than "justified" text that uses the whole
width of the page)

- Centering important -- but short -- chunks of text or
sub-headlines to further draw them out of the main body of text

- Use bullet lists (like this one!) to emphasize key
points

Test #12: Fine-tune your follow-up process to maximize sales
and attract more repeat business

Following up with your customers and subscribers using
autoresponders (automated e-mails) is crucial to generating
more sales as it often takes several contacts before someone
buys from your site
.

In your follow-up e-mails to new subscribers who haven't
bought from you yet, you can restate your offer and ask for
the sale again.

Send an immediate follow-up after new subscribers sign up,
giving them a reason to return to your site the same day
they sign up. You can test this against sending a follow-up
three days after subscribers first visit your site to see
which method works best.

Following up with existing customers is just as important.
In fact, tests show that 30% of customers will buy again if
they're given the chance.

It helps you develop profitable long-term relationships with
them and allows you to offer "backend" products relating to
their original purchase.

You can test sending a backend offer immediately after they
make a purchase against sending one three days afterwards to
see which approach generates more repeat business.

Use the Web's hottest new testing strategy to refine your
sales process

When testing, it's vital to only test one thing at a time so
that you know what change influenced the results. A method
of testing known as "split-testing" does just that.

It allows you to split your audience into two groups and
test, for example, one headline with one group and another
headline with the second group -- both at exactly the same
time!

It's an ideal testing strategy for any online business, but
especially for newer web sites with less traffic, as it
provides an excellent method for generating accurate test
results no matter your level of traffic.

Let's look at an example to illustrate how this works...

If you want to test elements of your salesletter, you need
to use your best-performing salesletter as a "control" -- a
benchmark against which all tests will be measured.

To test a new headline, for example, you need to create
another web page that's identical to your best-performing
one, but which includes the new headline. Using special
testing software, you then redirect half of your customers
to the old page and the other half to the new one -- over
exactly the same time period.

For example, if you have two customers called Bob and Jane,
testing software ensures that Bob sees salesletter "A" at
the same time as Jane sees salesletter "B" -- both on the
SAME URL. Your other customers are likewise split evenly
between the two different salesletters.

If you discover -- through tracking how many visitors go to
each page and how many sales each page makes -- that the
salesletter containing the new headline converts 15% more
visitors into sales, you know that the new headline is more
effective.

Then test other elements of the salesletter one at a time and
gradually fine-tune your sales process.

The software gives you the great advantage of testing the
two different letters over the same period. If you instead
test one headline over a couple of weeks, then the other
headline over the next couple of weeks, what if one of those
test periods includes a major holiday like July 4th, while
the other doesn't?

Or what if a major television event happens during one test
period but not the other? Both of these factors could
significantly skew your results if they resulted in fewer
people being online during one of your tests.

It's easy to set up a few basic tests, but as your business
grows and you become more experienced, you can carry out
more advanced testing using software like the following:

How to Eat, Sleep, and Breathe like
an Internet Marketing Genius!

What I Learned from My Good Friend and Colleague, Corey Rudl ~~ Genius Internet Marketer, Inspirational Leader, and Mentor to Thousands....

Since the announcement of Corey's tragic car-racing accident our office has received over 16,000 e-mails of support and condolences... and easily over 1,000 phone calls.

"Thanks" doesn't seem an adequate response to the overwhelming support and caring you've shown us.

(It's been rather humbling, really...)

You see, over the last couple of weeks, a question that keeps appearing in e-mails is, "How can I be like Corey?"... "How can I think like Corey?"

It seems you are interested in learning MORE than his secrets to Internet marketing -- you want to learn how to be "like" him.

So I'm going to give you a bit of insight into Corey's philosophies for business, success, and life.

These are a collection of the five most profound lessons I learned from Corey over the last eight years, some of which he loudly expressed to me (Corey talked loud and fast when he got excited)... and some he quietly but effectively shared through living example.

Lesson #1: Failure doesn't "happen" it's a choice.

------------------------------------------------------------

In Corey's mind, there were only two ways you could "fail."
You could give up and quit
. Or you could decide not to learn
from your mistakes
.

Corey believed failure was a choice.

So Corey never failed.

He tested new ideas. He learned from what worked, and what
didn't
. Then he applied those lessons to his next test or idea, and he kept doing this until he got results he was satisfied with.

Sure Corey made mistakes... Yeesh, I still cringe when I think of a $90,000 mistake we made two years ago. And sure, Corey would get really ticked off when stuff went wrong.

But Corey was also always the first person to seek out the positive in every bad situation and say, "Well, what did we learn from this?"

... And, more important, "Will we do it again?"

Corey firmly believed every costly lesson was going to result in exponentially greater success in the long term.

And he was right.

Lesson #2: Assume nothing, test everything

------------------------------------------------------------

Corey had zero respect for people who were content to assume. To him, it was a mark of laziness. So something everyone quickly learned when working with him was to deal in nothing but the facts.

If Corey asked a question, and you didn't know the answer, it was one thousand times better to say, "I'll look into it and get back to you," than "I think this might be the answer," or "I assume this is right."

Theories, assumptions, and guesses were the enemies of success as far as Corey was concerned. He believed you should either go straight to the source for the answers (even if that means paying thousands of dollars in consulting fees) or test it yourself.

And as Corey taught me, sometimes you even need to test the "facts." For example...

... A marketing strategy that you tested and proved to work as little as a month ago may be a complete dud today. (Retesting is ALWAYS worth the effort.)

... The customer demographics you collected through a survey last year may have drastically changed. (Are they're buying your products for DIFFERENT reasons now?)

... And some of the most interesting statistics may be based on flawed data. (Always read the "fine print," and if there isn't any, ask for it!)

Before you make decisions, ask questions. Assume nothing. Test everything.

And don't be afraid of offending someone -- even an "expert" -- by questioning their logic. The true experts will applaud you for this. And your questions will expose the imposters for who they really are -- wannabes.

Lesson #3: Make opportunities to learn, and take notes.

------------------------------------------------------------

It would be difficult to calculate exactly how much Corey spent on educational materials each year... but I've done the math and know it was roughly in the tens of thousands of dollars.

Corey was constantly reading... On airplanes, on holidays, in between meetings -- he was absolutely relentless. He would read every business book, article, course, and marketing campaign he could get his hands on.

And Corey didn't just read material related to Internet marketing; he made a point of studying OTHER industries, too -- both online AND offline. He was always looking for new strategies and marketing ideas that he could pluck from other industries and apply to his businesses.

It was all this reading that would frequently spark his "genius" ideas...

But I think the key to this secret is that Corey made TONS of notes about everything he read and kept all his thoughts in a couple of "master project documents" that he'd refer back to every month, looking for new ideas (they were literally hundreds of pages long).

That way, even if an idea didn't work today, he had record of it so he could refer back to it sometime in the future.

Corey knew that "genius" doesn't just happen -- you need to look for opportunities to learn, and keep track of your thoughts. Your best ideas will frequently be sparked by new information, or new approaches to old information.

Lesson #4: Seek out great teachers, and be a great listener.

------------------------------------------------------------

Corey firmly believed that if you want to fast-track your success, it's critical to learn from those who have gone before you... even if you just have the opportunity to learn from their mistakes.

So Corey made a point of seeking out teachers and mentors, and asking for their advice whenever he had the opportunity -- even if that meant paying hefty consulting fees for their guidance.

As far as Corey was concerned, you should always learn from the best. Find people who are getting the results YOU want to achieve, and ask them to mentor you.

And Corey was never afraid to ask "great people" for advice...

He was never concerned about looking dumb. And he never needed to be the smartest guy in the room. Corey was always focused on learning. So he was a student of everything... and almost everyone.

Corey was always asking people around him for feedback... What mistakes was he making? How could he improve as a leader? As a marketer? How could he be a better public speaker?

It takes guts to ask the people around you for feedback. But it takes wisdom to openly listen and learn from it.

Lesson #5: Define your own success and live with passion.

Corey's biggest frustration was that so many of his clients and subscribers just let life "happen" to them. I can't tell you how many times I heard him rant over the years, "They have dreams... but they don't set GOALS! Why don't they set goals and take action???"

One of the most inspirational things about being around Corey was his belief that absolutely anyone can be successful.

You just had to meet Corey once to know he wasn't just spouting the "anybody can start a profitable Internet business" line because it sounded good.

His enthusiasm... his actions... every word he spoke demonstrated his core belief that absolutely anyone can be successful.

If you decide that your age, background, and education limit your potential, they will. But if you decide that you can do anything, you will...

Dedicate Yourself to Kindness

There's a bumper sticker most of us have seen that reads: "Practice Random Acts of Kindness and Senseless Acts of Beauty." I love this idea! I want you to start with this idea and plus it. Why not, in addition to random kindness, plan out acts of kindness for the people you love, including yourself?

Dedicate Yourself To Kindness

As you go through your day you can practice kindness randomly ~ pick up trash as you walk down the street, put a quarter in an expired parking meter, send someone you hardly know a nice note or a small bouquet of daisies for a job well done, as you go through the toll or parking garage, pay for the car behind you.

What about the people you know who go unappreciated day in and day out? Send your parents or grandparents a card thanking them for all their years of dedication to you. Give your kids a big hug praising them for coming into your life and filling your heart with love. Take your dogs to the park ~ pets lower your stress levels and put more love, fun and whimsy into your life. Treat your best friend to lunch to thank them for supporting you throughout the year.

Also, be kind to yourself. Get a massage, eat healthy, watch funny movies, read inspirational books, etc. You are your own best friend. Treat yourself as if you are your main supporter, your biggest fan, because you are. Be good to yourself and you will influence others to treat you the same way. Watch what you say to yourself! Would you allow others to talk to you the way you do?


End your day by privately looking directly into your own eyes in the mirror and saying: "I love you!" Do this for thirty days and watch how you transform. Should you have a challenge using the word "love" to yourself you may want to start with the word "like", however, please start!!


ACTION STEP


In closing this week, I'd like to offer an exercise to complete in the
week ahead:

Some of the more famous people who provide me with loving inspiration are Jesus, and Mother Teresa. They were peaceful, kind individuals who made loving things happen. They inspired and continue to inspire the world.

Who are the most loving people you know, or know of? Take out your journal or notebook and number a page 1-7. Think of the 7 most loving people who motivate you. Next to each person you wrote down, list one thing you can learn and duplicate from them? Once you have your list, adopt one trait a day for the next week. By the end of the week you'll find your life beginning to positively transform.
